Refrigerator Repair for Hayward Kitchens and Garages

Cold milk, hard ice cream and a quiet hum again. Read us the model number, and the tech arrives knowing which parts to test first.

Why won't the freezer stay frozen, or why is it full of frost?

Frost and a soft freezer usually come from warm, humid air getting in, or from a defrost system that stopped working. Frigidaire sets freezers at 0°F and treats anything from -6°F to 6°F as acceptable. Ice cream that goes soft is a sign you're above that.

Freezer shelves with heavy frost built up on the back wall

On a fridge-freezer or an upright that defrosts itself, a thick sheet of frost over the back panel means the defrost heater, its sensor or its control isn't doing its job. The frost keeps growing until air can't get through, and then the fridge side warms up too.

Chest freezers and manual-defrost uprights are different: they're meant to be defrosted by hand. Whirlpool says to do it once the frost reaches about a quarter inch. Frost that builds much faster than it used to points to a lid or door seal that isn't closing, often because the freezer isn't level.

What helps the tech

  • Where the frost is: on the back wall, around the door, or on the food itself.
  • Whether it's a fridge-freezer, an upright or a chest freezer.
  • Whether the freezer sits in a garage, and if the garage gets cold in winter. Frigidaire advises against rooms colder than 55°F for its fridges.
  • Any code or temperature on the display.

Why is the fridge clicking but not running?

A click from the back every few minutes, with no steady compressor hum after it, usually means the compressor is being asked to start and can't. The tech tests the start relay and overload first, since they're the common, smaller repair, and then the compressor itself.

One exception: right after a short power outage, GE says the overload can click on and off until the system equalizes, and then cooling resumes by itself. If the clicking started with an outage and stops within the hour, that's what you heard. If it's still clicking hours later, call.

Where is the water coming from?

Water around a fridge has three usual sources, and where you find it tells them apart.

Small puddle of water on a wood floor at the base of a stainless refrigerator

Under the crisper drawers or out the front

Defrost water that couldn't reach the drain pan. The drain line from the freezer is frozen or clogged, so the melt overflows inside and runs out the front.

A sheet of ice on the freezer floor

The same blocked defrost drain, from the freezer side. It often comes with a gurgle or a freezer that's frosting more than usual.

Behind or underneath, near the wall

The water supply: the line to the ice maker and dispenser, the inlet valve, or the filter housing. Close the water valve to the fridge if you can find it, and mention it on the call.

Why does the fridge keep beeping?

Most beeping is the fridge reporting a temperature, a door or a power event. Close every door firmly first, and check that nothing is holding a drawer or the freezer door open.

If it keeps going, read the display. Frigidaire's French door models show H or HI when the freezer reaches 26°F or the fridge 55°F, and PF after a power failure. Whirlpool shows PO after an outage that let the freezer warm to 18°F. Those are messages about temperature. Codes made of numbers and letters, like Samsung's 21E or 22E, point to a specific part, and the fridge not cooling guide covers the common Samsung and LG ones.

Write it down before clearing it

Samsung asks owners not to unplug the fridge or press buttons to clear a code before a tech sees it. Take a photo of the display; it's the fastest way to start the call.

Does a garage fridge or freezer need anything different?

Garages are hard on refrigeration in both directions. Inland, summer heat pushes a fridge to run nonstop: NOAA normals put Concord's average July high near 88°F, against about 75°F in Hayward. In winter, a cold garage can confuse a fridge's controls, which is why Frigidaire advises against rooms below 55°F.

Some freezers are built for it. GE says its 2018 and newer upright and chest freezers are garage-ready, tested in rooms from 0°F to 110°F. If yours is in the garage, say so when you call, and tell us whether the trouble started in a heat wave.

Repair or replace an older fridge?

A 2007 NAHB study gave rough average lifespans, which are a useful starting point, not a rule.

ApplianceTypical life
Standard refrigeratorAbout 13 years
FreezerAbout 11 years
Compact refrigeratorAbout 9 years

A fan, relay or defrost part on a fridge well inside those years is usually worth doing. Hold the written price against the fridge's age and decide from there.

What else do Hayward callers ask about fridges?

Why does my fridge run all the time?

A fridge that never cycles off is losing cold or struggling to shed heat: a door seal that doesn't close, coils clogged with pet hair, a condenser fan that stopped, or a hot room. If it also isn't getting cold, the compressor side gets tested next.

Can you send someone for a built-in fridge?

Say it's a built-in, and read us the brand and model, when you call. Built-in units like Sub-Zero and Thermador sit in cabinetry with their own access needs, and the visit is planned around that.

How soon after the repair will it be cold?

Not instantly. GE says to allow 24 hours for temperatures to settle after startup, so keep the doors shut and the cooler handy for the first day.

Is a fridge with a bad compressor worth fixing?

Sometimes. It depends on the fridge's age, the type of compressor, and what the written price comes to. A compressor job on a newer fridge is a different call from one on a fridge in its teens.
