Hayward Dishwasher Repair That Starts Under the Sink

Water still in the bottom after the cycle ends? The visit begins under the sink, with the hose loop and the disposal hookup, before anyone pulls the pump.

Worth mentioning on the call

  • Brand, and any code or blinking light on the panel.
  • Whether a garbage disposal went in or got replaced recently.
  • Whether there's a small chrome cap on the sink deck next to the faucet. That's the air gap.
  • How high the water sits: just over the filter, or up near the door.

How much standing water in a dishwasher is normal?

A little. GE says one to two cups left in the bottom after a cycle is normal. Hayward Appliance Care sets up dishwasher repair for kitchens across Hayward and the nearby East Bay, for standing water, leaks, poor cleaning and machines that won't start.

The water level tells the tech where to look. Whirlpool notes that water just above the filter screen usually means a partial clog somewhere in the filter, the sump or the drain hose. Water up near the door points to a full blockage or a drain pump that isn't running at all.

So the tech starts with the spots that are quick to reach: the hose under the sink for kinks or a sag, the air gap, the disposal connection, then the filter and sump. The pump gets tested once the drain path is known to be clear.

Why won't the dishwasher drain after a new disposal went in?

The knockout plug is the usual answer. New disposals ship with a plug sealing the inlet where the dishwasher hose connects. If nobody knocked it out at install, Whirlpool says it blocks drainage completely, and InSinkErator warns the dishwasher may overflow. Frigidaire's i20 page and Bosch's E24 page both list the same plug.

The hose route matters too. GE and Frigidaire want the drain hose looped at least 32 inches above the floor, or run through an air gap, so dirty sink water can't run back into the tub. Whirlpool's install guide uses a different height, so the tech checks the loop against your brand's own guide instead of one number for every machine.

Water bubbling out of the air gap on the sink deck means the block is past the dishwasher, in the disposal or the drain line. The garbage disposal repair page covers that side of the sink.

New disposal, and now the dishwasher won't empty? Mention the install date on the call so the inlet plug gets checked first.

Water near the floor

Why is the dishwasher leaking onto the floor?

Open the door to stop the cycle, then cut its power and water. The switch or plug is usually under the sink or on its own breaker, and the supply is a small valve on the hot line under the sink. Then look at where the water shows up, because each spot points somewhere different.

Suds coming out the door

GE says to use only automatic dishwasher detergent. Hand dish soap foams up and pushes water past the door, and a spill of liquid rinse aid can do the same.

Drips from under the door

The door gasket gets checked for tears, cuts and flattened spots. GE also lists a dishwasher pressing against the counter or cabinets, which can keep the door from sealing.

Water pooling at the front

Samsung notes that when the front sits lower than the back, water collects at the door and finds its way out. The tech checks the leveling legs before blaming a part.

Water from underneath

A slow leak under the tub, from a hose clamp, the pump or the inlet valve, can soak the floor under the machine for a while before any water reaches the front.

The emergency steps for a flooding dishwasher sit with the other urgent appliance problems.

What do F9E1, i20 and E24 mean on a dishwasher?

All three are drain faults. On a Whirlpool, F9E1 means a long drain and F9E2 points at the drain motor. Frigidaire's i20 and Bosch's E24 both mean the water didn't leave properly, and Bosch names a blocked filter, a blocked hose and a loose pump cover under the filter as causes.

Two Whirlpool codes have nothing to do with the drain. F6E4 is the water float switch, and Whirlpool says a dishwasher that isn't level can set it off. F2E2 is a communication error on the main control.

Frigidaire also uses i40 for a clogged filter or sump. A code points the tech at a part, and the visit confirms it before anything gets swapped.

Codes by brand

  • Whirlpool F9E1: long drain
  • Whirlpool F9E2: drain motor error
  • Whirlpool F6E4: water float switch
  • Whirlpool F2E2: main control communication
  • Frigidaire i20: didn't drain properly
  • Frigidaire i40: clogged filter or sump
  • Bosch E24: not draining, often a blocked filter

Why are the dishes still dirty after a full cycle?

Usually because the water isn't reaching them with enough force. A packed filter, food stuck in the holes of a spray arm, or a tub that isn't filling all the way will each leave a film behind.

The tech spins the spray arms by hand and looks at the filter and sump first. Then comes the inlet valve, to see that water is actually coming in, and the wash motor that pushes it through the arms.

Why won't the dishwasher start at all?

Start with power. Many dishwashers are hardwired to their own breaker or plugged in under the sink, and Frigidaire shows PF after a loss of power. A door that doesn't latch also stops the start, so the latch and door switch come next.

If the panel lights and nothing runs, the tech checks the control. On a Whirlpool, F2E2 or a panel that stays dead after power is restored points that way.

What else do people ask about dishwasher repair?

Is a 9 or 10 year old dishwasher worth repairing?

It depends on the part. A 2007 NAHB study put a dishwasher's typical life at about 9 years, but a clogged drain, a door gasket or a float switch is a small repair on an otherwise sound machine. The written price from the visit lets you weigh it.

Does the dishwasher have to come out from under the counter?

Not always. The filter, spray arms, door gasket and the hose under the sink can usually be reached from the front. A leak under the tub or a pump change can mean sliding it out, so clear the sink cabinet before the visit.

Can a dishwasher leak reach the unit below mine?

Yes. Water under a dishwasher can run beneath the cabinets before much shows on your floor. In an upstairs condo or apartment, tell the neighbor or the building manager the same day so they can check their ceiling.

Can I keep running it until the visit?

Not if it leaks or leaves water above the filter. Each new cycle adds a fresh fill on top of what's already sitting there. Wash by hand for now and keep the hot valve under the sink closed.
