Fridge Not Working After a Power Outage?
Keep the doors shut and give it a day to settle. If it stays warm, the tech tests the control board and the compressor.
Why won't the fridge cool now that the power is back?
Most of the time it is cooling, just slowly. A fridge that sat without power for hours starts warm, and makers give it a long runway: Frigidaire and LG both say to allow 24 hours after an outage, and Samsung says reaching a set temperature can take up to 28 hours with the doors closed. Right after power returns, GE says the compressor overload can click on and off until the refrigerant settles, and then the compressor starts on its own.
So the first hour after an outage tells you less than you'd think. What it can tell you is whether the fridge has power at all, and that's where to start.
Hayward Appliance Care sets up refrigerator repair visits in Hayward and across the East Bay when a fridge doesn't come back. Usually that's a breaker, a tripped outlet, a display left in the wrong mode, or a part that failed when the power dropped or returned.
Is the food OK?
With the doors shut, a fridge holds food about 4 hours and a full freezer about 48 (24 if half full), per FDA guidance. Toss perishables that sat above 40°F for 4 hours or more. The first-ten-minutes page has the full table.
What should you check in the first hour?
These are safe, quick and don't involve opening anything up. Go in order and stop when you find the answer.
Is the breaker still tripped?
Outages, and the moment power comes back, can trip breakers. Find the one labeled for the kitchen or the fridge. A breaker that trips again right after you reset it is a sign of a fault, so leave it off and call.
Did a GFCI outlet trip?
Garage and some kitchen outlets have test and reset buttons. A second fridge or freezer in the garage often sits on one of them. Press reset firmly, then plug a lamp in to confirm the outlet works.
What does the display say?
A flashing alarm, PO, PF or Power Failure is the fridge telling you it got warm, not that it's broken. OF OF on a Samsung means showroom mode. A code like 88 88 or a number with an E is worth writing down before you clear anything, because Samsung asks owners not to clear codes before a tech sees them.
Did the settings change?
Electronic models usually return to your settings, but check them anyway. GE and Frigidaire both ship at 37°F in the fridge and 0°F in the freezer. If someone turned the dial while the power was out, set it back and give it time.
How long should you wait before calling it broken?
Give it 24 hours with the doors shut, unless you see one of the warning signs below. That's the window Frigidaire, LG and GE all give for temperatures to settle. You don't have to sit through it waiting, though: call today and we'll set the visit for just after it, so if the fridge hasn't recovered, the repair is already on the calendar.
Use that time well. Move what you can't lose to a cooler with ice, put a thermometer in a glass of water on a middle shelf, and check it in the morning. If the water reads near 40°F or lower and dropping, the fridge is recovering. If it reads the same as the kitchen, call.
| Brand | What the maker says after an outage |
|---|---|
| Frigidaire | Allow 24 hours. Running 24 hours with no cooling means service. |
| LG | Allow 24 to 48 hours for the inside to settle. |
| Samsung | Up to 28 hours to reach a set temperature with the doors closed. |
| GE | The restart won't harm it; allow 24 hours after any setting change. |
| Whirlpool | Shows a power outage alert if the freezer reached 18°F; clear it from the panel. |
Don't wait the full day if
What are the signs a part failed during the outage?
Some symptoms mean the fridge isn't recovering slowly; something stopped working. The control board, the compressor's start parts and the fans are what the tech tests first.
- Lights and display on, no cold air anywhere, and the compressor at the back stays silent hour after hour.
- A click from the back every few minutes that never turns into the steady hum of the compressor running, long after the first hour.
- A dead or scrambled control panel or dispenser while the fridge has power, or a display that keeps restarting.
- The breaker trips again right after you reset it, or there's a burnt smell near the back or the outlet.
- Fans run but the coils stay warm, or the freezer recovers and the fridge side doesn't.
What does PG&E outage season mean for a Hayward kitchen?
Fall is when hot, dry, windy days can lead PG&E to switch off power on purpose in high fire-risk areas, which it calls a Public Safety Power Shutoff. In October 2019, one shutoff cut power to about 1,400 homes in the Hayward hills east of Mission Boulevard and about 2,000 in the Fairview fire district, and the City warned that restoring power to every affected area across the state could take up to five days.
A shutoff that long is hard on a fridge in a way a short outage isn't. A freezer that thaws and sits warm can leave water under the crisper drawers once it refreezes, and ice can lock up the ice maker. If the power was out for days, mention it on the call; the tech will check the drain and the ice maker along with the cooling.
Living in the hills or in Fairview? Write the fridge and freezer model numbers somewhere you can find in the dark. It saves time on the call when the power comes back and something's wrong.

What else happens to fridges after an outage?
Why is my fridge beeping after the power came back?
Usually a temperature or power-failure alarm, not a fault. Whirlpool shows PO or Power Outage once the freezer has warmed to 18°F, and Frigidaire shows PF until you press Alarm Reset. Write the message down before clearing it.
Do I need to reset the fridge after an outage?
Most don't need it. GE says the restart won't harm the fridge and electronic models return to their old settings. If the display is dark or scrambled, switching the fridge's breaker off for a minute and back on is the reset most makers describe.
The display shows OF OF. Is it broken?
No. On a Samsung that's Cooling Off, the showroom mode, which keeps lights and display on with no cooling. Samsung's fix is holding the top two buttons on the left for about 5 to 8 seconds until it chimes. Check your manual for the exact buttons.
Why is the ice maker empty after the outage?
It waits for the freezer to get cold enough before it makes a batch, so ice comes last. Give it a day. If the freezer is cold and the bin is still empty, the ice maker repair page covers the next checks.
