Gas, Glass and Induction Cooktop Repair in Hayward
A burner that won't catch or a zone that stays cold gets traced to its own switch, igniter or board, so only the failed part gets replaced.
Which kind of cooktop stopped working?
Hayward Appliance Care sets up cooktop and microwave repair visits across Hayward and the East Bay. The first thing we ask is what kind of cooktop you have, because a gas burner, a radiant glass element and an induction zone each fail in their own place.
Gas burners
Sparks without lighting, lights and then goes out, or burns low and uneven around the cap.
The tech checks the switch behind the knob, the spark module, the igniter and how the burner cap sits.
Radiant glass top
One element stays dark, only heats on high, or won't shut off when the knob is turned down.
The tech tests the element, the control or switch that feeds it, the wiring at the terminal block, and the glass itself.
Induction
A zone flashes and won't heat, or the whole cooktop shuts down partway through a meal.
The tech checks the pan first, then the coil under that zone, the power board and the cooling fan.
Is the cooktop the top of a range, with the oven acting up too? The oven, range and stove repair page covers the bake element, igniter and sensor side.
Glass top cracked: can you keep cooking on it?
No. Switch it off and leave it off until the visit. GE and Whirlpool both tell owners not to cook on a broken glass cooktop. A spill or a spray of cleaner can get in through the crack and create a risk of electric shock.
While the glass waits for the visit
- Turn every element off. If the cracked area won't switch off, cut the power at the breaker.
- Keep water, wet cloths and spray cleaner away from the glass.
- Leave pots and pans off the glass until it's been looked at.
On the visit the tech checks whether the crack has reached the elements or the controls underneath, then gives you a written price for the repair.
Why does a gas burner keep clicking with the knob off?
Start with moisture. GE says water left after cleaning or a boil-over can make the igniters click, and it can take a few hours to dry. GE's second check is the knob itself: it has to sit fully at OFF and be popped back out.
Still clicking once it's dry and every knob sits at OFF? Then a switch behind one of the knobs, or the spark module, is stuck sending spark. One bad switch can set off every igniter on the cooktop at once, so the tech tests each switch before replacing the module.
A gas smell that hangs around, or one you notice with every knob off, is a different call. Start with the guide to an oven or stove that smells like gas.
What the tech checks on a gas burner
- The switch behind each knob, one at a time
- The spark module and the wire to each igniter
- The igniter tip for cracks or buildup
- The burner cap seated flat and the ports clear
Still clicking after a few hours to dry? Call to book a visit, and each knob switch gets tested before any part is ordered.
Call (XXX) XXX-XXXXThe magnet test
Hold a fridge magnet to the bottom of the pan.
- Sticks firmly: the pan works on induction.
- Slides off or won't stick: the zone can't heat it.
- Sticks only in places: the pan will heat unevenly.
Induction zone won't heat: is it the pan or the cooktop?
Check the pan before anything else. An induction zone heats the pan itself through a magnetic field, so a pan it can't work with stays cold on a perfectly good cooktop.
Whirlpool's rule is the magnet test. Cast iron, enameled steel and multi-ply pans with a magnetic base work. Aluminum and copper usually don't, unless they have a magnetic base built in.
If a pan that passes the test heats on one zone and sits cold on another, the fault is in the cooktop. The tech checks the coil under that zone and the board that drives it. A cooktop that shuts itself off mid-meal gets its cooling fan looked at too, so say if that's what happens.
Microwave runs and spins but won't heat: what next?
Rule out two simple things, then leave the rest to the tech. GE says to check that the Timer function wasn't set by mistake, since it counts down without cooking, and to open and close the door firmly.
If it still won't heat, the fault is inside the cabinet. The door switches, the high-voltage parts and the magnetron get tested on the visit, with the microwave unplugged and the stored charge safely dealt with.
An over-the-range microwave also runs the vent fan and the light over the cooktop. If either of those quit at the same time, mention it, since that changes which parts the tech tests first.
Don't open the cabinet
GE gives no do-it-yourself microwave repair advice at all, for a plain reason: the capacitor inside can hold a high-voltage charge even after the microwave is unplugged. GE urges owners not to attempt any microwave repair, and that includes taking the cover off to look.
Cooktops and microwaves
What else comes up on cooktop and microwave calls?
Why do all the burners click when I light just one?
On many gas cooktops that's normal. GE says several burners clicking while one of them lights is expected. The fault is clicking that keeps going after the flame has caught and the knob is back at OFF.
My induction cooktop buzzes. Is something wrong?
Not always. GE notes that lightweight magnetic steel pans can rattle on induction. If the noise stays with a heavier, flat-bottomed pan, describe it on the call so the tech knows to listen for it.
Is an older over-the-range microwave worth repairing?
It depends on age and the part. A 2007 NAHB study put a microwave's typical life at about 9 years. On a younger unit a repair is easier to justify; past that, hold the written price from the visit up against the cost of a new one.
