Garbage Disposal Repair That Gets Hayward Sinks Draining

Disposal humming and the sink full of water? Your tech frees the jam from underneath, then tests the reset and the motor before anything gets replaced.

Why does the disposal hum without grinding?

A hum with no grinding is usually a jam. The motor is getting power, but something is wedged against the turntable and it can't spin. Hayward Appliance Care sets up garbage disposal repair visits in Hayward and around the East Bay for jams, leaks, units that won't switch on and worn-out disposals.

Switch it off at the wall and leave it off. A motor held on against a jam heats up until its overload protection cuts it out, and flipping the switch again just repeats that.

The tech works from below the sink. A 1/4-inch hex key fits the hole in the center of the unit's underside, and turning it back and forth frees the turntable without anyone reaching into the drain. Then comes the part that matters for next week: finding what jammed it and running the disposal with water to make sure it grinds cleanly.

Hands out of the drain

InSinkErator puts it plainly: "Do not place your hand in the garbage disposal at any time." That holds even with the switch off.

  • Switch the disposal off before you look in.
  • Use a flashlight to see. If something is sitting in reach, lift it with tongs or pliers, never fingers.

Disposal won't turn on at all: what's the red button for?

That small red button is the reset. On InSinkErator units it's on the bottom of the disposal, and when the overload has tripped it sits about a quarter inch lower than usual. Pressing it is the one reset worth trying. If it won't stay in, InSinkErator says to wait 10 minutes and press again.

Can't find a button? Some models don't have one. InSinkErator's Essentials units use an automatic overload that resets once the motor cools, which can take up to 20 minutes.

Still silent after that, with no hum at all? Then power isn't reaching the motor, or the motor has failed, and that's the visit.

What the tech tests on a dead disposal

  • The wall switch, and the outlet under the sink or the hardwired connection
  • The breaker for that circuit
  • The reset or the automatic overload
  • The motor itself, once power is confirmed at the unit

Water under the sink: which part of the disposal is leaking?

Dry the outside of the disposal with a paper towel, run a little water, and watch where the first drop forms. That spot tells the tech where to start.

Where the water shows upWhat the tech looks at
At the top, where the disposal meets the sinkThe sink flange and its seal, and the mounting ring that holds the unit up
At the side, where the dishwasher hose connectsThe hose clamp and the dishwasher inlet on the disposal
Where the drain pipe leaves the disposalThe discharge tube, its gasket and the bolts holding it
From the body of the disposal itselfThe housing. Here the tech weighs a repair against a new unit

Until the visit, keep a bowl under the drip, wipe the cabinet floor dry and leave the disposal switched off.

Dishwasher stopped draining after a disposal swap?

The knockout plug is the first suspect. New disposals leave the factory with the dishwasher inlet blocked by a plug. InSinkErator says it must come out whenever a dishwasher is connected, and if it's left in, the dishwasher may overflow. Once it's knocked out it can't be put back.

Older setups have the same link. Because the dishwasher drains through the disposal, a jammed or clogged disposal backs the dishwasher up too. The tech checks the inlet, the hose connection and the disposal's own drain before blaming the dishwasher. If the disposal checks out, the dishwasher repair page covers the pump and filter side.

Dishwasher backing up into the sink? Mention a recent disposal swap, and the knockout plug gets checked before anything else.

What shouldn't go down a garbage disposal?

Anything hard that isn't food, plus grease and harsh chemicals. InSinkErator's own list starts there. A bottle cap or a spoon that slips past the splash guard can wedge against the turntable and leave the motor humming.

Run cold water, not hot, while it grinds and for several seconds after you switch it off. Grease and fat shouldn't go down any drain, disposal or not.

If something from this list went down right before it stopped, say so on the call. It tells the tech what to look for.

Keep these out

  • Clam and oyster shells
  • Glass and china
  • Plastic
  • Metal, including bottle caps and utensils
  • Caustic drain cleaners
  • Hot grease

Is an old garbage disposal worth repairing?

Start with its age. A 2007 NAHB study of home components put a food waste disposer's life at about 12 years, and NAHB adds that use changes that a lot.

A jam, a tripped reset or a loose drain fitting is a repair on a disposal of any age. A unit near the 12-year mark that leaks from its own housing, or keeps jamming after it's been cleared, is where a new disposal starts to make sense. The tech can put both options in writing so you can compare them, and you only pay for work you agreed to.

What do people ask about a stuck or leaking disposal?

Can I still use the sink while the disposal is broken?

If the sink drains, yes, as long as the disposal stays switched off. If water is standing in the sink, stop running the tap, since the dishwasher shares that drain and can back up too.

Why does the reset button pop again right after I press it?

Usually because whatever jammed the disposal is still in there, so the motor overloads the moment it starts. Pressing it again and again won't clear that. Leave it switched off and call.

I rent my place. Can I book the visit myself?

Yes. Tell us on the call that it's a rental, and have the landlord's or manager's contact handy if they want to approve the written price. About 42 percent of Hayward homes are rented, per Census survey figures.
